Radio / Electronic beacons* For when visibility is bad. - *Racon - Radar Beacon*: When a ship's radar pings it, the Racon replies with a coded signal that shows up on the radar screen. - *AIS AtoN - Automatic Identification System*: Transmits the buoy's name, position, and type directly to a ship's AIS display. Some are real buoys, some are "virtual" and don't exist physically. - *DGPS Beacon*: Sends correction signals to make GPS accurate to ∼1-3 meters for harbor approaches. - *Radiobeacons / MF beacons*: Older system, transmits a signal ships can take a bearing on. Largely replaced by GPS. *4. Sound beacons* For fog. - *Fog horns, bells, whistles, gongs* on buoys, lighthouses, and platforms.
