Over the following two decades, the conflict evolved from a conventional military campaign into a prolonged counterinsurgency involving coalition troops, Afghan security forces, and efforts to rebuild Afghanistan’s government and institutions. Major operations targeted terrorist networks, including the raid that killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan in 2011. Throughout the conflict, thousands of coalition personnel, Afghan soldiers, and civilians lost their lives, while millions of Afghans were displaced. Although many terrorist leaders were captured or killed and al-Qaeda’s ability to conduct large-scale international attacks was significantly degraded, the Taliban gradually regained strength and continued its insurgency. Following the withdrawal of U.S. and NATO forces in 2021, the Taliban returned to power, bringing the longest war in American history to an end.
