My children do not receive an allowance, my friend. They send me invoices. And before you think I have lost my mind, let me explain. ✦ The problem with the ordinary allowance is not the money. It is the lesson underneath it. You exist. Friday comes. Money appears. No value created. No problem solved. No one helped. And yet, the payment arrives. That is not financial education. That is employee training at seven years old. So we changed the question. Instead of paying for chores, we pay for initiative. Read something difficult and explain what you learned. Do something that genuinely scares you. Bring us an idea that helps someone and explain what it costs to make it happen. Then something fascinating happens. The child stops asking, “How much will you give me?” And starts asking, “What is this worth?” That is the lesson I want my children to carry into adulthood. Because I am not raising children who wait to be paid. I am raising children who understand how to create value. And perhaps one day, they will not wait for the paycheck. They will send the invoice.
