After further defeats, Napoleon abdicated in 1814 and was exiled to the island of Elba. He returned to France in 1815, beginning the period known as the Hundred Days. His final defeat came at the Battle of Waterloo, after which he was exiled to the remote island of Saint Helena. Napoleon died there on 5 May 1821, aged 51. His legacy remains deeply controversial. He is remembered simultaneously as a brilliant military strategist, a powerful reformer, and an ambitious ruler whose wars caused enormous destruction across Europe.
