@dangmepeople: Dangme Festivals Season 2026 AGƆTSOM (AGOTIME) KENTE FESTIVAL! In this video, watch the arrival of HRM Nɛnɛ Nuer Keteku IV, Konor of the Agɔtsom (Agotime) Traditional Area and President of the Agɔtsom (Agotime) Traditional Council, wearing the finest traditional attire and rich Kente, showcasing the beauty and latest designs of Agɔtsom Kente. Konor in Dangme refers to an Overlord, a title comparable to a Paramount Chief. Today is THE GRAND DURBAR. THE GRAND DURBAR The Grand Durbar is one of the major highlights of the Agɔtsom (Agotime) Kente Festival. On this day, the Konor presides over the durbar to receive homage and welcome visitors and invited guests. Traditional rulers from all 37 towns and villages of the Agotime Traditional Area in Ghana and Togo gather at Kpetoe and process through the main streets to the durbar ground at GRA Park. The dress code is Kente in any form or design, with Chiefs and Queen Mothers displaying their finest traditional attire and the latest Kente designs. The Master Weaver is carried with his loom to showcase the winning Kente design at the durbar. Warlords also ride in their palanquins, dancing and re-enacting traditional battle scenes. The durbar features singing, drumming, dancing and cultural performances, while Chiefs and other important leaders address the community on matters concerning development. On average, more than 1,500 varieties of Kente can be identified during the Grand Durbar each year. THE MIGRATION STORY According to Agɔtsom migration tradition, the people were once together with their Dangme brothers and sisters before migrating from an earlier settlement around Lekpongunɔ (Lekpongunor/Lekponguno), along the coast in present-day Ada. Today, there is a town called Lekpongunor in the Ningo area, corresponding to the name preserved in the Agɔtsom migration tradition. The migration is associated with a period of major political and military upheaval in the region, including the expansion of the Akwamu Empire around the late 17th century. This tradition continues to preserve the migration history and heritage of the Agɔtsom people. PRESERVING DANGME HERITAGE Although Agɔtsom (Agotime) is located in the Volta Region and its people are historically Dangme, Ewe is widely spoken today, particularly among the younger generation. Yet, the people of Agɔtsom continue to proudly preserve their Dangme roots, language, culture, traditions and heritage. There are still towns and communities in Agɔtsom where Dangme remains the main language spoken, while elders continue to pass the language, history, culture and traditions on to younger generations. Wherever Dangme people live, our culture lives with us. Dangme culture. Dangme language. Dangme heritage. Dangme identity. Dangme unity. The Dangme Page is proud to document and share these cultural moments as part of our commitment to promoting Dangme culture, documenting our heritage and strengthening Dangme unity.
