so there’s no issue when the beauty standard is being tan but when it’s being pale it’s a problem?

In imperial Japan, being pale meant you didn’t work out in the sun, which often meant you were rich and had servants to do work for you. Same applies with having a bigger figure, it meant you had access to lots of food and were fed multiple meals

Bruh it’s same thing as how white ppl wants to be tanned. Also, its because back in the days people had to work outside which made them tanned. Due to that being pale was symbole of wealth and that js got carried on. Bffr

It’s the same in Korea. I went to multiple locations of beauty products and they all had three options for white skin and none of the ppl there were even remotely white. The average Korean is medium light to tan. But you should see ppl on local tv shows their foundation is at least three tones whiter than their neck. I could never get used to it 😭

east asia is pretty ethnically homogenous, so why would anyone expect a wide range of skin tones? most people there naturally have a similar skin tone😳

I mean Japan does prioritize health a lot more compared to America and, considering most Japanese are lighter, they aren’t going out in the sun risking skin cancer or skin damage, hence the continuous pale complexion. In general, tanning is only so normalized in America because most aren’t thinking about the consequences, just the beauty of a tan. Personally, as someone who was very tan as a child, it was because i was outside constantly damaging my skin by the direct sunlight right after i started being inside more often or protecting my skin better. I quickly became pale. That's the reality for a lot of Americans too. They just don't know it because they are soo used to sun damaged skin.
