White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Monday defended the federal government’s handling of the deadly floods in Texas, calling it a “depraved lie” to blame the Trump administration for the death toll. “Unfortunately, in the wake of this once-in-a-generation natural disaster, we have seen many falsehoods pushed by Democrats such as Sen. Chuck Schumer and some members of the media,” she said. “Blaming President Trump for these floods is a depraved lie, and it serves no purpose during this time of national mourning.” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) sent a letter demanding that the Commerce Department’s inspector general investigate whether vacancies at the National Weather Service (NWS) contributed to delays, gaps or diminished accuracy of weather forecasts. The New York Times reported that key forecasting and coordination positions at the agency’s San Antonio and San Angelo offices remain vacant. While some of the openings predate the current administration, the vacancy rate is about double what it was at the start of President Trump’s second term. Ms. Leavitt pushed back on suggestions that the vacancies harmed the NWS’s functionality, declaring that the agency “did its job.” “We know the National Weather Service provided early and consistent warnings. They gave out timely flash flood alerts. There were record-breaking lead times in the lead up to this catastrophe. There is ongoing flood monitoring,” she said. “And these offices were well staffed. In fact, one of the offices was actually overstaffed. They had more people than they need, so any claim to the contrary is completely false. And it’s just sad that people are pushing these lies.” Ms. Leavitt also said the tragedy had not changed the administration’s position that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) should be dismantled, with its responsibilities shifted to state and local governments. “Whether [assistance] comes from states or the federal government, that’s a policy discussion that will continue,” she said. “The president has always said he wants states to do as much as they can, if not more.” #karolineleavitt #texasflood #cspan
