@primorauniverse: Scientists Found a “Black Hole Star” at the Dawn of the Universe It looks like a star. But hidden inside it could be a rapidly growing black hole. NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has helped astronomers investigate some of the mysterious “little red dots” seen in the early universe. One of the newest objects, MoM-BH-1*, is being studied as a possible “black hole star” — a rapidly accreting black hole surrounded by dense gas that makes the object appear star-like. The object existed less than about 660 million years after the Big Bang, giving astronomers a rare look at the universe when it was still extremely young. The idea could help explain how enormous supermassive black holes formed so quickly in the early universe. Webb observations have also found strong evidence supporting black-hole-star models for other little red dots, including spectral signatures from hydrogen, oxygen, helium, and an “iron forest” that point toward a powerful, rapidly accreting source hidden inside dense gas.
