this is what cost him the fight the preparation didnt prepare him fot the type of resistance he got in the fight so many sparring sessions where Ilia gets to a position the partner just shells up while Gaethje would throw an uppercut right hook etc

Josh Hokit was right about Ilia’s training. Nobody appears to be truly challenging him during sparring. His distance management, timing, and decision making were lacking against Gaethje. Ilia nearly pulled off the win when he dropped Gaethje with the body shots but hopefully he adjusts his training methods and works with larger opponents moving forward.
