Imagine someone is intentionally trying to create problems between you and your partner. They send messages. They make disrespectful comments. They flirt with your partner in front of you. They do whatever they can to make you angry, jealous, or uncomfortable. They want your attention. They want you and your partner to argue. They want your relationship to start revolving around them. Now imagine that every time this person does something, you immediately bring it to your partner. “Did you see what they said?” “Why are you not responding?” “You need to do something.” “You need to handle this differently.” Then you and your partner spend the entire night discussing that person. Eventually, your partner says: “Please stop bringing this person into our relationship. I see what they are doing, and I am handling it.” But now you become defensive. “I am only trying to help.” “I am on your side.” “I am trying to protect our relationship.” That may honestly be your intention. But your intention and the result are two different things. The person wanted attention, and you gave it to them. They wanted to change the mood of your relationship, and you helped them change it. They wanted to create an argument between you and your partner, and now you are arguing with your partner about them. The person trying to cause the problem no longer has to do anything. You are now carrying the problem into the relationship for them. That is exactly what happened during my livestream. A large number of accounts suddenly started posting racial slurs and other garbage in the chat. I would block one account, and several more would appear. I do not know whether they were bots or several people working together. What I do know is that they were trying to interrupt the stream. They wanted my attention. They wanted everyone else’s attention. They wanted the entire livestream to become about them. I saw what was happening, stayed calm, and started blocking the accounts as quickly as they appeared. But while I was handling it, people in my chat repeatedly started saying: “You need a mod.” I understand why they said it. They wanted to help. But every time someone said it, they were publicly confirming that the attack was working. They were telling the attackers: “We see you.” “You are interrupting the stream.” “You are affecting Alex.” “You have become the main conversation.” Then, if I told my viewers to stop acknowledging it, they could become defensive. “We are only trying to help.” Now I have two problems. I have the accounts posting garbage. Then I have my own viewers arguing with me about how they are responding to those accounts. The attackers wanted to disrupt the relationship between me and my audience. Now my audience is helping them do it. Whether I need a moderator is a separate conversation. Maybe I do. That does not change what was happening in that moment. Repeating “You need a mod” while I am already blocking the accounts does not help me block them. It only gives the attackers more attention and makes their attack feel more important. If I clearly have not seen something, alerting me once is helpful. If you can already see me handling it, continuing to announce it is not helping. The best thing you can do is continue the normal conversation. Do not let the attackers decide what everyone talks about. Do not help them change the atmosphere. Do not carry their disruption further into the room. Just like in a relationship, you can believe you are protecting something while accidentally helping the person who is trying to damage it. What you meant to do matters. But what your actions actually helped create matters too.
