@thesunnahguy: I’ve been in gatherings where someone starts talking badly about another person and you can almost feel everyone becoming uncomfortable. But nobody says anything. Because nobody wants to be that guy who kills the conversation. So people laugh. They nod. They add their own little story. And before you know it, someone’s entire character is being pulled apart by people they probably trust. Islam takes this seriously for a reason. Allah says: "And do not backbite one another. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of their dead brother?" (Qur’an 49:12) That imagery is supposed to make you uncomfortable. Because the person you’re speaking about isn’t there. They can’t explain themselves. They can’t correct the story. They can’t defend their honour. I have so much respect for someone who can simply say: “Bro, let’s not talk about him when he’s not here.” You might kill the mood for a few seconds. But you’ll gain something far more valuable long-term. Trust. Because everyone sitting there now knows something about you. If their name ever comes up when they leave the room... You’ll protect them too.
