The inland taipan (Oxyuranus microlepidotus), often called the fierce snake, is widely regarded as the world's most venomous snake based on the toxicity of its venom. Native to the remote, arid regions of central Australia, it inhabits the cracking clay plains of Queensland and South Australia, where it spends much of its time hidden in deep soil cracks and abandoned animal burrows.
