It's a format designed to reveal people nobody had yet heard of. One of that edition's discoveries is Egyptian soprano Fatma Said. She takes the stage as if just beginning. But a year earlier, Said had become the first Egyptian soprano to sing at the Scala di Milano, in 2016. The program's "discovery" had already opened opera's most coveted door before she ever stepped foot there. Presenter and singer meet side by side in the Brindisi of "La Traviata" — the most famous toast in the history of opera. It's a celebration song. But whoever knows the plot knows what it doesn't deliver: the woman who raises this glass is doomed to die before the end. Verdi wrote this cheerful melody knowing exactly that. More than 170 years later, this toast remains the first thing sung when one wants to sound happy — even when, in the story, happiness has an expiration date.
