Laid off in December. 7 months, thousands of applications and dozens of interviews later I decided to sell off some stock and start my own business. Trying to find a job right now is the most traumatic, humiliating and degrading process I’ve ever been through in my 51 years of life and 31 years of working with no gaps until now. I got ghosted MULTIPLE times after THREE interviews. I said enough is enough. I want to build something that shields me from ever going through this process again. I know my skills and my value. I want to invest them into a company that deserves them, my own!

Some creative congressmen need to come up with a bipartisan Applicants' Bill of Rights bill. A good one could : 1) Require specific response times for updates on every step of the process, 2) limit the # of interview steps, 3) ban "free work" homework assignments unless paid and agreeable to the applicant, 4) if not awarded the job, require that applicants are told why and whether or not an internal applicant was selected or the position was eliminated altogether, 5) ban use of AI in resume review and also ban automated HR systems from eliminating candidates by age, and 6) bak the practice of requiring prior work experience and advanced degrees for entry level jobs.

I’ve been working adult in both of these recessions. In 2008 I had no problem finding another job with just a high school diploma. Now in 2026 I’ve been unemployed for four months with a masters degree. Before this year, I had never been unemployed for more than a month. It truly is insane.

One company had me block off 2 hours of my day for 4 back to back to back to back interviews. Got an automated rejection email 2 days later after giving the exact same answers to the exact same questions 4 times in one afternoon
