@tallowapp: A post naming “bad” protein powder brands has been going around. It names Optimum Nutrition, Dymatize, Ghost, BSN and Premier Protein. Consumer Reports actually tested 23 protein powders and shakes for lead in 2023. Optimum Nutrition’s Gold Standard Whey, Dymatize, BSN’s Syntha-6 and Premier Protein all came back low — acceptable for daily use. The worst results were plant-based: Naked Nutrition’s Vegan Mass Gainer (7.7 mcg of lead per serving) and Huel’s Black Edition (6.3 mcg) both landed above the FDA’s interim reference level for a single serving. Across the board, plant-based powders averaged 9x more lead than whey. We had two popular plant-based/blended powders checked against independent lab data. Truvani’s vanilla plant protein tested at 46.6 ppb cadmium and 21.7 ppb lead (Lead Safe Mama / Purity Laboratories, June 2026). Just Ingredients’ chocolate protein — labeled NSF Certified — tested at 71 ppb cadmium (Lead Safe Mama / SGS North America, October 2024). Here’s the part that matters: Truvani’s own plain, unflavored protein — same brand, no flavoring or sweetener added — scores 100/100 in Tallow. It’s the flavored vanilla and chocolate versions that turned up elevated cadmium. If you’re buying protein powder: look for third-party testing (NSF, Informed Sport), skip artificial sweeteners and “natural flavors,” and if you can get it unflavored, that’s usually the safer version of the same product.
