China is a place that's extremely homogeneous. Some of them have never seen other ethnicities in person, so they get extremely excited. You may feel like an exhibit and there's no sugarcoating it. I tell my non-Asian friends, its going to happen and theres no ill will behind it, HOWEVER please do not go if you can't tolerate it. It sound insensitive, but you can't change a ton of people in a country that wont get your boundaries. Literally, just don't go. Handle your peace.

As a Chinese person, I'd say it's just a sense of curiosity - no ill intent. We take photos with horses and elephants too. It's not that we think you're celebrities, it's just that we've never seen them before😂

China and Vietnam has millions of people who grew up in the rural villages with little education and homogeneous societies. Then later these people move/visit cities. Obv these folks know black people exist but likely have never seen a black person in their life. Again, I repeat in their life. This could be 50 years or 10 years. Either way these people are just curious. I have family in China and this is what they tell me.

It’s because it’s rare. We take living in the UK for granted. In the UK, we see virtually every race on a daily basis. In China, a lot of people can go a lifetime without seeing a black person. They are far more homogenous than our society. It may seem odd to us but most of them just want to remember seeing a black person. They don’t mean any ill by it.

If it makes you feel better they also do this with white people, it’s not an exclusively black people thing. Most of the time they’re just posting it on their WeChat (Facebook almost) to say they met a foreigner. Typically the racist ones will not approach you and only take sneak photos but that’s not to say racism couldn’t be an element to your experience

It’s probably just because I’m a foreigner and they’re excited to see someone from another country, so they ask to take a picture together. Why does everything have to be turned into racism? Honestly, it’s exhausting.
