It's not superstition, it's sterile technique. 🏥 After scrubbing in, only the front of a surgeon's gown, arms, and gloves are considered sterile. The back of the gown is treated as non-sterile the entire time. If a surgeon walked in facing forward normally, there's a real risk of accidentally brushing against a door, wall, or another person, instantly contaminating the sterile areas that need to stay clean for the procedure. That's exactly why they enter in reverse. Walking in backwards keeps their sterile front facing away from anything they might accidentally touch, and it also allows nursing staff to help finish gowning and gloving them from behind without ever having to touch or risk contaminating the sterile zones.
