@realafricastories: Why is the US dollar used as the benchmark for currencies across Africa and much of the world? The answer takes us back to Bretton Woods in 1944, when 44 countries helped create a new global financial system centred around the US dollar and gold. Then, in 1971, President Richard Nixon ended the dollar’s convertibility into gold, but something surprising happened: the dollar remained dominant. Today, African countries are exploring ways to trade and make cross-border payments using their own currencies through systems such as PAPSS, the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System. So how did the US dollar become so powerful, and could Africa eventually reduce its dependence on it? #USDollar #AfricanCurrencies #AfricanEconomy #DeDollarization #RealAfricaStories

The dollar is just printed paper.. if the world stopped using it the US would collapse so they use their military to enforce it..but the world is waking up to their games..

You omitted to mention what happens to countries that try to break the link with the petro-dollar: They get invaded and their leaders murdered by the US. Iraq and Libya suffered this fate. So it is not just a question of trust.

The Petro-dollar agreement between the US and Saudi Arabia has expired and the Saudis are not interested in renewing it. Should oil be priced in any other currency, the dollar is done for especially with over 38 trillion dollar in US debt.

African countries have been trying to trade using their own currencies for ages, but it still hasn’t really happened because the basic problems never change. Most African currencies aren’t trusted outside their own borders — they jump up and down in value, and other countries don’t want to get stuck holding money that might suddenly drop. So everyone ends up using the US dollar because it’s stable and easy to trade with. On top of that, African countries all have different rules, different banking systems and for the most part unstable politicians who change directions more than the wind.
