Dunmore Park House is a ruined Tudor-Gothic mansion located near Airth in Falkirk. The history of the estate begins in 1754 when the Murray family purchased the land, which was originally part of the Elphinstone property, and renamed it Dunmore. In 1761, John Murray, the 4th Earl of Dunmore, famously constructed the Dunmore Pineapple within the estate grounds. This striking, highly detailed architectural folly served as a hothouse for growing exotic pineapples. The grand mansion itself was commissioned decades later by George Murray, the 5th Earl of Dunmore. He hired the prominent architect William Wilkins, known for designing the National Gallery in London, to create a vast country house. Constructed between 1820 and 1825, Dunmore Park House was built in an elaborate Tudor-Gothic style, featuring extensive stone masonry, grand galleries, and ornamental battlements. It served as the primary, lavish seat for the Earls of Dunmore for nearly a century. Economic pressures eventually forced the Murray family to sell the estate in 1911. Following the sale, the mansion passed through various private owners and functioned briefly as a private residence. Between 1961 and 1964, the building was adapted for use as a private girls' boarding school. However, the school closed after just three years, leaving the grand building entirely vacant. The abandonment marked the beginning of the mansion's rapid structural decline. In 1972, large sections of the house were intentionally dismantled, and the lead roofing was stripped away. This drastic measure was taken by the owners to avoid paying heavy property taxes levied on intact buildings. Left exposed to the weather, the mansion quickly deteriorated. #castlesofscotland #Scotland #abandoned #travel #hiddengems
