Creating this ideal version of someone and loving that version is not just a "wrong" act on your behalf, it's probably more of a sign of a "damaged" character that you have to work one. Unfortunately if it was an action it would be easier to work on that, but most likely it's a result of the type of love, the wrong type of love that you've encountered in the past, probably even as a kid. If you love someone healthy, you aren't just two people that agree, you are one thing, one soul and by interacting with each other authentically you allow this one thing to evolve to something or someone better.

I’d take it a step further and say you should be able to increase respect by being vulnerable to your partner and you should be able to be messy and know that only makes them want to know you more. Love matches mess with curiosity. There are limits to what one should tolerate of course, but for most part your partner should want to lean in when you are switching between those versions of your self with curiosity.
