When I came to Canada at 1997, I was only 17 years old. The minimum wage at the time was around $7 an hour. Believe me, I worked two jobs every day—about 16 hours a day. On weekends, I also washed cars and worked at gas stations. I did whatever work I could find.
I saved aggressively, and within two or three years, I had enough money for a down payment on a house. I’m not saying it was easy, but I was willing to work hard, sacrifice, and save.
So what has changed today? Young people are making around $19 an hour, yet many feel they can’t get ahead. I understand that housing and the cost of living are much higher now, and buying a home is genuinely difficult. But at the same time, you have to plan, save, and make sacrifices.
You can’t work 40 hours a week, spend heavily every weekend, and expect to buy a house within a year or two. Go out with your friends, enjoy your life—but also think about your future.
Young age is the time to build a foundation. Work hard, learn skills, save money, and plan for the future. Success doesn’t happen overnight.
And don’t look down on immigrants who are willing to work long hours, take difficult jobs, live within their means, and save every dollar. Many people succeed because they are willing to sacrifice today for a better tomorrow.
Instead of only complaining about jobs, wages, or housing, let’s also talk about planning, discipline, hard work, and financial responsibility. Nothing comes for free—you have to work for it.
