At 12 years old, I began numbing myself with alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, and food. And that continued for most of my life. There is nothing quite as humbling as sitting with your pain and your thoughts without escaping them. Sometimes the pressure of my thoughts and the way I thought about myself was enough to lead me back to using. Over the past few years, I’ve quit all substances and I’m now 100% medication-free. I want to be clear that I’m not against medication. I was on medication for most of my life. But it became important for me to experience life without it. Here are five of my top stress relievers that helped me quit drinking and calm my nervous system: 1. Hot baths. My tried and true. I have the fondest memories of being in very hot water as a child like bathtubs and jacuzzis. Heat has always been calming for me, and it’s now a nightly ritual. 2. Breathwork. This is a daily practice and discipline I easily forget. I often catch myself holding my breath and have to remind myself to slow down, take deep inhales, sometimes quick little “bunny breaths,” as I like to call them. 3. Intense workouts. This is the most controversial one. I do high-intensity training multiple times a week which is more than what’s typically recommended for my age. I need to sweat. Pushing myself hard is imperative for my mental health. 4. Prayer. I stopped trying to do everything on my own. Surrendering to a higher power was the final shift for me. 5. Fasting and nutrition. Fasting gives me a sense of control, accomplishment, and peace. It’s helped me form a better relationship with food and has lowered my overall stress. Eating in a way that I know agrees with me which is high protein, high fat and that has made a huge difference in both my gut health and my mental health.
