It’s a paradox how you have to go through an entire artistic and spiritual journey to get back to what 6 year old you just felt like doing to begin with

George bailey :
personal expression hands down beats trying to appease the market, being true to yourself is a difficult step to take as most artists have the feeling of insecurity and for the majority art as a career is insecurity

I often wish I hadn't gone to university for my BFA. I think it stunted my childish indifference to right and wrong and made me question my ability to be creative because I was always comparing myself to others. I've found that experimenting with materials and just letting my subconscious do the work has helped me free myself.

What Would BB Do? :
Don’t forget the reason you even started in the first place. Because you genuinely just wanted to do it. So just do it.

Most creatives face a similar struggle - wanting to make what will be well received or what will sell - likely because you need the $ and want to get it from creative output. Chasing what others like or what other creatives successfully sell is a hard way to develop as an artist. If you’re in a position to make what gives you satisfaction, and continuing that for only that reason, then can find a market for THAT work, you’ve won as an artist.

You wish you have said it to a 20 years old you? Man, I hit 40 this year, and only now similar realization finally blossomed in my mind which allowed me to readjust my mindset when I'm making something. The 20 y/o version of myself just wouldn't get it, so no regrets on late realization. Funny thing, though, is that Nike figured it all out decades ago and keep tirelessly spreading this knowledge to masses with their famous slogan.

I did all things. I’m still painting and making art at 60. It still doesn’t matter. So you’d better get used to it.
