@goatcult.media: Before CNN launched in 1980, founder Ted Turner reportedly had a video prepared that was meant to be the network’s final broadcast. Turner had famously said CNN would stay on the air until the world ended, and when that happened, they would “play Nearer, My God, to Thee before we sign off.” The recording shows a U.S. military band performing the hymn. The clip was stored in CNN’s archives under the name “TURNER DOOMSDAY VIDEO” and was reportedly intended to be played by the last employee still able to broadcast if some catastrophic event brought the network and basically everything else to an end. A former CNN intern later discovered the recording in the network’s archive system. The existence of the video was talked about for years, but the actual footage eventually became public in 2015, when former intern Michael Ballaban published a copy. So thankfully, if you’re seeing it now, it doesn’t mean CNN thinks the world is ending 😭 If this suddenly started playing on live TV, what would you think was happening?
