before this, they were both friendly to each other but merely acquaintances. i think they were both intrigued by each other to an extent, but had none of the stuff that happened at the bar actually happened, they likely wouldn't have crossed paths non-professionally again. however both eiji's and ash's bravery and self sacrificial nature for each other during their capture brought them together for the rest of their relationship. i feel like ash seeing eiji "fly" was js like this switch that turned on. not only seeing someone so free, but also seeing someone do something so dangerous and drastic for someone he barely knew was like life altering for ash

as represented in the mt kilimanjaro themes, the snow leopard was ash and the birds set in the scenery represented eiji - ash followed eiji up the mountain, but eiji could fly to get around. ash was forever stuck on that mountain
