@tracy_tysonmd: Recess isn’t a reward. It’s part of learning. 🛝🧠 Research shows that regular recess can help kids reduce stress, improve attention, regulate emotions, increase physical activity, and return to the classroom more ready to learn. Taking recess away because a child is struggling academically or behaviorally may remove the very thing that could help them succeed. Kids aren’t designed to sit and focus for hours without a break. Movement, play, social connection, and time outside are important parts of healthy development—and can support academic performance, not compete with it. Recess should be protected as part of the school day, not something children have to earn. Play matters. Movement matters. And sometimes the best way to help a child focus is to let them go play first. 💛 #Pediatrics #Recess #ChildDevelopment #SchoolHealth #Parenting

My AuADHD kiddo had recess taken away on a regular basis in K. You mean he can’t sit still? So you took away the only opportunity to get the wiggles out? He’s 14yo but still talks about her and she has caused so much school related anxiety.

Having this issue with my autistic adhd son. Last year in K they frequently took away recess. These conditions are treated as behavioral issues in public school and it’s been made very clear they don’t have staff that truly understands these conditions in kids. Expecting any child to sit still and be focused on academics over 7 hours a day is hard for any child. But it’s a whole new situation for a child with autism and adhd. Taking his recess makes his day so much harder. 😭

Agreed that recess is essential. If recess is a teacher's only free time slot, should they be allowed to keep a kiddo in for one-on-one help?

Oooh this one always makes me frustrated. Especially when the teacher is using this technique in the spring. If this technique worked, it would have worked in September!!!
