@omnisyntra: Watch Part One, “When Capability Hides Disability,” first—it sets up what I mean by the autistic gap and why what comes next matters. #AutisticGap #2e #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD #CognitiveEcology
So true. This is evident in the school system. My son who has meltdowns at school is given lots of support. My daughter who masks but burns out before the end of the school year is denied support.

So I am ‘low needs’ autistic myself, and I’m a social worker for autistic clients in Canada. I have a tiny number of low needs clients, most are high needs. The thing is that there aren’t a lot of services for low needs autistics. What little money there is is spread thin amongst the most dire cases. Like helping people who are the most at risk: examples people who need help with being fed or using diapers or self injury or aggression or full time supervision. There’s basically no services for people like me. It’s sort of sink or swim, either you can work full time and hit burn out at 30 and cry after work each day or you are on disability but can’t afford rent and groceries. People like me need help too. I think a little support, would keep a lot of lower needs autistics from crashing out and withdrawing from the workforce. Like I need help with navigating some types of bureaucracy, with household cleaning, prepped meals, flexible working hours, more time off, having a service dog etc. Most of what would help me just costs money I don’t have. But like subsidizing a house cleaner isn’t really a priority when the kids i work with run into traffic or bite other students. I get why I’m not a priority. But it would be nice not having to kill myself to fit a neurotypical mold. I wish there was budget for all of us.

I haven’t been able to work in 2 years. I can’t bring myself to fill out the applications, because I KNOW I am in complete burnout and am currently UNRELIABLE for anyone but my child. Even if I managed to get the job, and be excellent at times…I am currently too inconsistent, running on 0 energy, and my moral scrupulosity has not allowed me to make promises I don’t fully believe I can keep. I have been quite capable at times! Put myself through college in 3.5 years, starting when my baby was 6mo old, deans & presidents lists. I’m still holding all things family together, but have now burnt through all my savings and credit card limits, got on Zoloft and have been trying somatic therapy exercises, and I DON’T know what to do to be ok again.

can you make this downloadable? would love to be able to share with relatives who are learning about autism, especially with late diagnosis, and who struggle with understanding this.

I am standing on the cusp of seeking disabiiity support, but am faced with having to declare out loud that I cannot work. And that's where I'm stuck. I *could* do *some* work, but I can't imagine how *that* work would fit for someone who wants to exploit my labor for themselves. It's not the work alone, its capacity to endure the rest of it. And I don't foresee anyone accommodating the rest of it, so, I guess, I can't work. But to declare that and sign my name to it is making me freeze.

My capacity is also very inconsistent and can be unpredictable. That's actually a critical piece of the impairment. The very thing that makes getting and maintaining steady employment extremely difficult. What I was once capable of doing is no longer what I am capable of.

The amount of times 😑. Like, "She can form sentences and has reading comprehension = this person is clearly fine and needs no accommodation." Cool, cool. Now I've taught myself administrative law and am friendly with the Human Rights Tribunal. Your move slick 😏.

Imagine one caregiver requiring a child to constantly demonstrate value in order to receive care and name the dynamic. In this case it seems that the same requirement is the demand of society as a whole. Does anyone experience this as an implicit and clearly understood threat of exile if they falter?

I'm on the NDIS (Australian disability support program) and having to constantly reiterate and re-explain (often to the same people) this. Like yes I can hold an intelligible conversation with you during a meeting, (seemingly) functioning perfectly well, because I need to in order convey what I need, but MAN I'm going to have to take at least a week without any other interactions to recover from the sheer cognitive exhaustion imposed by that.

With all this recent stuff I went from “oh quit whining you’re just lazy” to “you’re obviously self destructing on drugs and have no excuses” (while I’m not) while I’m far too disabled to even get the supports I need. No in between no compromise. Finally cogent enough to use my words thank god. One thing I’ve learned is how to spin a narrative.

Students who are being supported /accommodated and getting good grades won’t qualify for a 504/IEP, so teachers have to essentially let them fail first. It’s heartbreaking.

my experience with the disability insurance that I specifically paid into in case I had to stop working (which I did) was so traumatic that I would be better off suffering in silence. this has been the worst time of my life.
