I’d say Obsession does know what it’s doing. Yes, he’s an incredibly young director, but I don’t think Barker’s age excludes him from purposefully examining emotional depth in the context of a failed relationship. We’ve seen other equally youthful directors do this in their time such as PTA, and while I’m not equating PTA’s overall talent to Barker, I think his body of work as a young man shows that we can buy into other 20-something’s ability to approach these themes with intentional nuance and depth.

26 is a fully formed adult. At that age my parents had 3 kids and a pending divorce. If you are living life or at least observing others, you can certainly tell a compelling story.
