@.savingthecastle: We thought installing a 100 year old door would be a simple upgrade for the castle. Well… more than a month later, I can confidently say we were VERY wrong. 😅 It took a professional carpenter working eight hour days, countless adjustments, new wood, new hinges, endless sanding, painting, rebuilding the frame, and enough sawdust to cover half the castle. At some point I genuinely started wondering if this door would ever be finished. But after all that work, we finally installed it! Seeing a beautiful piece of Old Riga history get a second life as the entrance to our castle made the entire process worth it. I love it! Seeing the time and attention to detail taken on this project has really restored my faith in humanity. I bought my home after it was owned by house flippers and have been undoing their work ever since. The things they did to this house 😭 Watching this door be made just right was so satisfying.

Just to clear up a few things: this is NOT the final result! We still have details to finish, including relocating the peephole and making final adjustments. Some people asked why we didn’t simply enlarge the doorway instead of modifying the door. The opening is part of the castle’s structural masonry, so changing it would mean interfering with the building itself. Others suggested installing a new door, but the whole point of restoring a historic castle is to preserve its character. This antique door fits the castle and, properly restored, can serve it for many more decades. Making a completely custom arched door to match the outer arch would also be an entirely different project and budget. And yes, the doors intentionally open outward, with one smaller leaf and one larger leaf, which is why the doorway is not centered under the outer arch. Huge thanks to everyone leaving kind comments and understanding how much time, craftsmanship and money goes into restoring something like this instead of simply replacing everything with new! 🏰❤️
