Kpop is in fact the equivalent of fast fashion in the music industry ☹️

a lot do quality kpop fell off around 2018/2019 tbh..... especially as a bts fan after DNA came out I felt the trade in lyrical quality for a commercial catchy "global" guise and snd felt disconnected ever since

I think that’s why groups like XG, Bini, No Na, Girlset and even a K-Pop group like NMIXX will have longevity in Asian music imo; the music is at the forefront of their identity and it ultimately why I enjoy them so much.

no genuinely. i’ve been a long time kpop stan up but until recently i’ve had a hard time grappling with the incessant push for money grabbing and toxicity that feels like it hasn’t changed in the last 10 years :(

lisa's song was actually for the world cup which makes it worse cos the whole idea behind world cup songs was to be "unifying" and "togetherness" or whatever (which i know is fake cos fifa🤮 but still like why would she go w that theme for her song......)

K-pop is in the same jail as Hollywood movies. The industry no longer remembers or cares that music and film are artforms. They are products to be sold now, and the hope is that ppl are too shallow or distracted to notice it’s become soulless.

I think that’s why my daughter likes k pop demon hunters but doesn’t like k pop. She wants to be inspired. I play her Hilary Duff.

in the effort to assimilate to modern western standards, kpop lost it’s identity. this is very different back in 2010s when they simply were inspired by the west but still adapted it to their own identity. oh and let’s not deny it’s because of BTS, who i respect, but the corporate aspect of kpop got them all greedy to succumb to try and “mainstream” the korean pop sound.

It is now a race on which idols can get ambassadorship to "high-end" brands or get to promote ads for various brands.

the only group I genuinely listen to these days and follow closely is xlov. theyre self produced, the members chose to work together and theyre actively carving a space for gender nonconforming people

i love that you brought up the nature of spectacle, especially with the use of idols in advertising and marketing. what do their relationships with brands and as brand ambassadors change about the image their labels have curated and monetized for them that the fanbase can consume.

I agree, if we’ve come as far as defending the music/products a celeb puts out JUST bc it’s their creation under the guise of “cultural protection” then what are we left with? Ppl like how they look, fine but its facetious for them to be like “well it’s the k-industry, that’s how it is.” Critiquing the Kpop industry as it stands isn’t an indictment of Korean society imo but rather a challenge to get back to their roots (originality, fanfare and yeah cultural elements). It may not be my place but this is my opinion of where kpop is going and it seems like it will only accelerate esp with the over use of AI now.

I was working with a Korean producer for a song to pitch, and I kid you not he said lyrics don’t matter.. and I was shOOK, what do you mean you don’t want to use music to say something? you can still write catchy tracks but they can have a soullll 💀 hence all the ai trash top lines lately I assumeee

yes to everything. The cherry on top is that you CAN developp artistry and be commercial. Ultimately not at their utmost at the same time, but there is a sweet spot, like what XG is doing. And today we see Lisa, Katseye to name a few, so completely devoid of it, so immune to any real criticism, it s so absurd

A large part of this can be traced back to 2017 when BTS started to seriously launch their career in the West. When BTS started to gain significant success in the Western music market, almost every single Kpop label wanted that same success that BTS had for generating a quick buck, not understanding why BTS became successful as they are (a lot of factors, but that’s another story), especially during times when (specifically male) idols lose significant popularity such as the 7-year curse and post-enlistment. At some point, they should just restart and start focusing on the Korean market instead of an entirely different music market that has vastly different demographics and preferences.

Is it wired if I say the fact that Gen Z is growing up we Have started to listen to better Musically Made songs, for example Gen1-2 had better songs (even though they were all copies of Black music) they still were doing a better Job and creating music.

Yes!!!! Ever since BTS became a huge seller in USA mainstream, it became sooooo devoid as a whole. Such a shame, I think it ties to American capitalism- devoid simple and flashy to look at

Someone said this and its stuck with me when listening to new Kpop songs. "If I as someone with ADHD cant maladaptive daydream to your song, I dont like it." If listening to your song doesn't creative some kind of mental imagery for me, its just not for me. And I have those feelings regarding songs that the fandom is obsessed with I dont like SKZ-Wolfgang, the adlibs are fun but its very clear that everyone's obsession with the song is heavily linked to one of the members being shirtless the whole song
