Part Four Of #Shikwa In these verses of Shikwa, #AllamaIqbal presents the early Muslim spirit as one of relentless movement, mission, and intellectual courage. Driven by the symbolic "wine of Tawḥīd," early Muslims possessed a conviction so powerful it pushed them across mountains, deserts, and the uncharted "Sea of Darkness." This active faith refused to make fear its boundary, producing action and curiosity rather than stagnation. It is the ultimate expression of Khudi (selfhood), discovering a higher purpose and developing inner strength to defy worldly limitations. Speaking through the voice of the #Muslim Ummah, Iqbal recalls a time when this community challenged human enslavement and held the Qur’an in its heart, not just its hands. However, he exposes the tragic distance between the Ummah’s glorious past and its stagnant present. His rhetorical #complaint to Allah asks: if we inherited these transformative ideals, why have we lost our honor? Iqbal reminds us that merely claiming #History cannot preserve a civilization. Faith must be actively embodied through character, justice, and sacrifice. The real tragedy is losing the inner character that once generated that historic power. Iqbal deepens this complaint by comparing Muslims to other nations. Acknowledging that human imperfection exists everywhere, he points out a painful contradiction: divine blessings seem to shower others, while hardship ("lightning") strikes the Muslim world. He questions the tension between religious identity and actual merit, challenging the assumption that simply belonging to a faith guarantees divine favor. This forces a harsh self-examination: the decline is not just due to external circumstances, but a loss of the inner moral qualities that once made the Ummah worthy of strength. This grievance extends to worldly prosperity. Iqbal provocatively contrasts spiritually unaware nations enjoying worldly success with Muslims who seem left only with promises of the Hereafter. He does not equate wealth with righteousness, but uses this disparity to dramatize the Ummah's painful sense of decline and the apparent withdrawal of divine favor. It highlights the agonizing gap between what the community believes it represents and what it has actually become. Using the metaphor of a desert mirage, Iqbal illustrates the Ummah’s current hardship, deprivation, and frustrated hopes, despite Allah’s limitless power to change their condition. He boldly asks if poverty, humiliation, and the taunts of others are the true recompense for historical sacrifices made in Allah’s name. This highlights the deep emotional contradiction between their past faith and their present wandering in a desert of weakness and uncertainty. Finally, Iqbal expresses the profound anguish of a community left with mere memories while others lead the world. Yet, the tragedy is not merely political, it is existential. Muslims see themselves as the active bearers of Tawḥīd. Using the metaphor of the Sāqī and the cup, Iqbal asks: if the people who actively carry the message disappear from history, what happens to the message itself? The ultimate tragedy is not just losing worldly influence, but losing the living connection between a sacred, spiritual ideal and the people meant to embody it.
