A tsunami warning was issued and later lifted, but small tsunami waves were recorded, including a wave reported at approximately 1.6 meters (5.3 feet) in one coastal area. Landslides blocked roads. Buildings collapsed. Thousands evacuated. And tragically, authorities are now reporting at least 47 deaths, with rescue operations still underway. More than 235 aftershocks have already followed. But then, approximately 13 HOURS LATER… another powerful earthquake struck Indonesia. 🇮🇩 NORTH SUMATRA — M6.9 📅 August 15, 2026 📍 Western Indonesia ⬇️ Depth: approximately 173 km This wasn’t simply another small aftershock beside Flores. It occurred far across the Indonesian archipelago, in North Sumatra, and at a dramatically greater depth. So within roughly half a day: M7.7 — EASTERN INDONESIA then M6.9 — WESTERN INDONESIA Two near-7 or greater earthquakes. Two very different locations. Approximately 13 hours apart. Indonesia sits within one of the most complicated and active tectonic regions on Earth, along the enormous Pacific Ring of Fire. That means major earthquakes here are not unexpected. And two earthquakes occurring within hours does not automatically mean that one caused the other.
