@kbfsufan: We were definitely cowboys back in the 80’s but we were also firefighters!! Anyone else have to put out real fires in orientation and annual education? Or does anyone else remember having to watch that Australian short film in fire safety called “Hospitals Don’t Burn Down?” That haunts me to this day! It’s actually on YouTube…22 minutes long if anyone is interested in seeing it. I feel especially lucky that THAT didn’t happen with my patient and the smoking bed! 👀🔥👀🔥 Drop some comments about what YOU had to do in orientation back in the day or if you had to watch this movie! #nurse #nurses #nursetok #throwback #firesafety
I ran at 8.5 months pregnant from one side of the facility to the other with two huge fire extinguishers only to be told it was a drill. I was one of the few staff to show up.

My job called a code for a child elopement in negative degrees weather this year and he was a known escapee me and other nurses were outside freezing looking everywhere for him … we called the police too and they said it was a drill 🙄 we were so disappointed in them for doing that as a drill we were terrified

That would be great practice! I’ve never used a fire extinguisher. You’re right about being in a moment of panic…. All brain functions can cease and you can’t remember a thing!

Fire training seems a good idea in lots of jobs and even life. I saw a local video not long ago where a bus stop was on fire and a worker from the kfc right there got the extinguisher to put out the fire but in the excitement of the moment had a hard time working it. Even if trained on how to use one, it’s different than actually having to use one on an actual fire when there’s screaming around u and ur feeling the heat from the flames

Honestly think this would be a great thing to do now too! Workers would be more confident and prepared if a fire happened

We had the firemen after the extinguisher they handed you a bath blanket to snuff out the rookie firemen who was on fire in a bed out in the parking lot. All that training so people would see the fire blanket (for a drill) and kick the blanket in a corner and run.

I work at a facility and every year they bring the fire department in to do this training. They go over all the correct things to do, right after that they do the controlled fire, which each person has to do and if they mess something, or does something wrong, the fire department will get them to do it a second time with the department telling what to do as they do it. then makes then do it another time on their own. the 2 most common mistakes are, 1. not aiming at the base of the fire but higher more at top of flames. 2. when they walk away and turn their back to the area. you are supposed to back up from the fire and keep watching the area for it to flame back up

AINs in nursing homes do that training yearly and how to get bed bound residents out of bed and dragged out on a sheet. Fire extinguishers at the ready. Some you have to leave.

Summer camp we had to teach people how to put out oil fires (we had staff use water to put out an oil fire 😂😭) and use hand pump water fire extinguishers 🧯

It’s definitely good to know how to use the fire extinguisher in real time versus watching a video hands-on. That’s the best way then you know what to expect when you use it.🥰
