The most famous test, Starfish Prime, exploded about 250 miles (400 km) above the Pacific Ocean, creating a massive artificial radiation belt and producing auroras visible across a huge area. The blast also damaged or disabled satellites and caused electrical problems in Hawaii roughly 900 miles away.
