I made the mistake of watching this movie with my family and quickly the conversation turned to “maybe that will happen to you.” They could’ve easily made the main character bi or made the love interest a non-man and it really wouldn’t have affected the central plot. So disappointing

I think what annoyed me most about it was that there was zero reason for her not to just be bi from the beginning but having unfulfilling relationships with girls and boys until she meets ~the one. Her being a “lesbian” but falling in love with a man was pointless

I was so mad when i saw this movie, why not make the character bi from the beginning instead of saying she’s gay ??? OR even better ☝️just make your GAY character fall in love with a GIRL it’s not that hard it would not have changed anything to the story

i think the problem is this trope does far more harm than good. like yes it's nice if somebody who had that exact experience resonates or feels validated by seeing it in film, but i think that is VASTLY outweighed by the harm it does. society at large will never look down on a lesbian realising she's bi and dating a man, in fact it is society's preferred path for all lesbians. this kind of "you just need to find the right man" rhetoric is already deeply ingrained in people's minds and leads to lesbians not being taken seriously, being constantly doubted and degraded, facing threats of corrective r*pe and literal conversion therapy. nobody can help what their real life story is and if this is their reality that's fine, but in the homophobic society we live in i feel like writers intentionally choosing to write stories that validate that kind of thinking does far more harm than they realise

I just don’t think I’ve ever seen a story about a lesbian discovering she likes men that left me feeling like “wow, that was a story worth telling.” There’s already so much pressure irl for lesbians to consider men and center men. And this is coming from someone bisexual btw - I love bi rep but not like this.

The problem is not that it purports to be but is not a lesbian movie, the problem is that it is comp het propaganda. deliberately so. I’ll die on this hill as a person brought up with this kind of media. The fact that it felt like a bait and switch to so many is because it was. The teenagers are alternative and cool, they do drugs and have sex. It says Hey queer kids, this movie is for you! But the film has very obvious Christian-traditional themes throughout, with strong wholesome nuclear family values, an omniscient guide, parental wisdom, martyred lover etc. its not just a film about a woman realising she’s bisexual and falling for a guy, she literally has an epiphany that her relationship with a woman was sex-based, hollow and unfulfilling, and her relationship with a man is transcendent and life changing in comparison. when people deny that something with an obvious agenda is propaganda, that just means it has worked.

the biphobia is so real... this film isn't about a lesbian who gets straight... it's the story of a teenage girl discovering she's bi and it's honestly one of the best film i watched for this theme!!

felt icky to me. i have, VERY few times in my life (once i think?) met someone who identified as a lesbian that later came to be bisexual. on the other hand, i've been on the receiving end of the "you haven't met the right guy" more times than i can count. or, men posing as a best friend but actually had intentions all along to "become the right guy," which obviously destroyed the friendship and was a huge betrayal. i think in the current climate, this movie sent the completely wrong message and it feels especially frustrating when megan park isn't even queer.
