If you take it a step further, it makes sense. In AFAA, Eywa’s face appears for all 3 kids- Kiri, Tuk, and Spider. At this point, all 3 kids have reason to highly respect and love Neytiri. Tuk- it’s her mom, the woman that dove after her in a sinking ship and comforted Tuk even though Neytiri was convinced they were both probably going to drown. The group needed the great-mother to save the people, and Tuk knows Neytiri will do anything to keep her safe. Spider- Neytiri truly saw him at this point in the movie as one of the people, not just a pink skin. Finally getting her approval was a major win and Spider knows that. If Jake was his father figure, Neytiri was the mother that never wanted Spider. And now she has acknowledged her hatred was misdirected towards him and “sees” him now. Neytiri was that final step of acceptance Spider needed. Kiri- Grace might be Kiri’s biological mom, but Neytiri raised her. While Kiri seeks Grace for comfort and guidance occasionally, Neytiri is the rock that Kiri has always been able to count on- with or without a connection to the spirit trees.
