@joecoxtech: You need to isolate those smart home devices from everything else on your network so that privacy is protected. Here’s how to do that. #networksecurity #smarthometechnology #firewall #router #privacy
forgive me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't that mean that iot devices are separated from the rest of the clients, which IMO kinda defeats the purpose of smart / remote controlled devices? Wouldn't it be easier to just block outgoing traffic from those devices?

I'm trying to do this with my ubiquity dream router 7. I have an IoT VLAN and a guest Wi-Fi VLAN set up. I just need to figure out the firewall rules in order to keep the IoT devices from being able to access my laptop PS5 etc.

How do you prevent the devices from being hacked?

Thats all great and all but they are mainly just sending data about how you use the device itself to “some Chinese server” like the temperature you like to keep your house at and possible energy usage on air conditioning

Fun fact, most routers have a setting where you can enable guest Wi-Fi and set a password and have most of your IOT device is connected to that

Well, you’re gonna run into a problem like with the LG smart TVs, where they actually scan for Wi-Fi IDs, judging by signal strength, will categorize it as part of your house and your devices. It would also try to connect to open networks at time as well. So putting it on the label will not work on this on signal strength, will categorize it as part of your house and your devices. It would also try to connect to open networks at time as well. So putting it’s own Vlan will not work. However, it’s a good policy to separating them anyways in case something does get compromised.

But why don’t you enforce zero trust? The device should not send data back to the manufacturer.

yes!. acl rule on IoT to block Google and cloudflair DNS. then setup a DNS rewrite of port 43 to adguard home and unbound.

Or you can set up home assistant and build up a 100% local only IOT network.

I’ve always wondered about IOT configurations. So if they are on separate VLANs and cannot talk to any other devices outside their own network, let’s say for example I want to set up an automation where someone rings the doorbell I want WLED light strips to turn on. If they are on separate VLANs, would that prevent the lights from activating?

I truly haven't figured out vlans. So I have all my iot stuff on the same network with home assistant and everything else. BUT all. of my iot stuff is blocked form the Internet with my router, and adguard as a back up. Keeping everything local. And I access home assistant through a wire guard vpn. Is that a decent solution in your opinion?
