Tornadoes are rapidly rotating columns of air that extend from a thunderstorm to the ground. They are among the most powerful and destructive weather phenomena on Earth. What causes tornadoes? Most tornadoes form from severe thunderstorms called supercells. They develop when: Warm, moist air meets cool, dry air. Strong wind shear (winds changing speed or direction with height) causes the air to spin. The thunderstorm tilts this spinning air vertically, creating a rotating updraft called a mesocyclone. If the rotating column extends to the ground, it becomes a tornado. Characteristics Wind speeds: Usually 65–200+ mph (105–322+ km/h), though the strongest can exceed 300 mph (480 km/h). Width: Can range from a few yards (meters) to over 2 miles (3 km) wide. Length: Some last only a few minutes, while others remain on the ground for over an hour. Movement: Typically travel between 20–40 mph (32–64 km/h), but speeds vary. Types of tornadoes Supercell tornadoes: The strongest and most destructive. Landspouts: Form without a rotating thunderstorm and are usually weaker. Waterspouts: Tornadoes that occur over water. Multiple-vortex tornadoes: Contain several smaller rotating vortices within one larger tornado. Strength Tornadoes are rated using the Enhanced Fujita Scale (EF Scale): EF0: 65–85 mph (Minor damage) EF1: 86–110 mph (Moderate damage) EF2: 111–135 mph (Considerable damage) EF3: 136–165 mph (Severe damage) EF4: 166–200 mph (Devastating damage) EF5: Over 200 mph (Incredible destruction) Where they occur Tornadoes can happen on every continent except Antarctica. They are most common in: United States (especially "Tornado Alley") Canada Argentina Bangladesh Parts of Australia and Europe Dangers Extremely strong winds Flying debris (the leading cause of injuries and deaths) Heavy rain and hail Lightning Flash flooding Safety tips Go to a basement or a small interior room on the lowest floor. Stay away from windows and exterior walls. Protect your head and neck with a mattress, helmet, or blankets. If you're in a vehicle, seek sturdy shelter if possible. Stay informed with weather alerts and warnings. Interesting facts Tornadoes can occur at any time of year, though they are most common in spring and early summer in many regions. They often appear as funnel clouds but can also be hidden by rain. The strongest tornadoes can destroy well-built homes, uproot trees, and toss vehicles through the air.
