“Tatar” was a real ethnonym for various Turkic and Mongol-related peoples of Central Asia and the steppes. European maps from the 1500s–1700s regularly labeled huge unexplored or poorly-known regions “Tartary” — you’d see “Chinese Tartary,” “Independent Tartary,” “Russian Tartary,” etc. By the mid-to-late 1800s, “Tartary” had essentially disappeared from serious maps and scholarship, surviving mostly as an old-fashioned or poetic term (you still see “Tartar” used ethnically for Crimean Tatars, Volga Tatars, etc., who are real, distinct peoples today).
