Penemuannya mengenai jalur laut langsung pertama yang menghubungkan Eropa dan India—melalui Tanjung Harapan dan melintasi Samudra Hindia dari Malindi di Kenya hingga Kozhikode—membuka jalan bagi penjelajahan dan perdagangan Eropa dengan India, serta dianggap sebagai peristiwa penting dan titik balik dalam sejarah dunia. Pelayaran Pertama: Pada tanggal 8 Juli 1497 Vasco da Gama memimpin armada empat kapal dengan awak 170 orang dari Lisboa.
