On 9/11, we say: “Never forget.” We remember the 2,977 people murdered that day. We remember Betty Ong, the Chinese American flight attendant who stayed on the phone from Flight 11, calmly relaying critical information while knowing she might never make it home. But remembrance cannot mean valuing innocent life only when the victims look like us or come from our country. Her name was Hind Rajab. She was five years old. On January 29, 2024, Hind was trapped inside a car in Gaza after Israeli forces opened fire, killing six members of her family. She spent hours on the phone with the Palestinian Red Crescent, surrounded by their bodies and begging to be rescued. An ambulance was dispatched after its route was coordinated with the Israeli military. The two paramedics sent to save her, Yusuf Zeino and Ahmed al-Madhoun, were also killed. Hind’s body was found 12 days later inside the bullet-riddled car. Israel initially denied that its forces were present. More than two years later, its military acknowledged that Israeli troops fired on the car and ambulance and opened a criminal investigation. They FIRED 335 ROUNDS at the car from CLOSE range and concluded that the shooter could have seen civilians—including children—inside. Remembering Hind does not diminish the lives stolen on 9/11. It honors the lesson we claim that day taught us: every innocent life matters, every family deserves the truth, and grief has no nationality. “Never forget” cannot end at America’s borders. Remember Betty Ong. Remember Hind Rajab. Remember who they were and refuse to erase who killed them. #september11
