it was to cover up the smell of the sewers or lack there of....same principle as planting lilac trees around out houses.

actually wrong about most of that except for the frankincense you see they used to take frankincense and roll it with toe jam yes you heard that right they use toe jam so kind of smell you know like perfume but with a underlying stink of Limburger yes kind of limbergerish so yes back in the millennials toe jam was quite easy to acquire but not so much the frankincense......... but it might have been a little bit of myrrh as well
