The institution began in 1984 as the Center for the Fine Arts and later became the Miami Art Museum, expanding into a collection museum for modern and contemporary art. Its biggest transformation came in 2013 when it moved to Biscayne Bay and became the Perez Art Museum Miami, known as PAMM. The waterfront building was designed by the internationally renowned Swiss architecture firm, Herzog & de Meuron. Instead of creating a traditionally closed museum, the architects designed PAMM like a tropical veranda. A massive roof extends beyond the galleries, creating shaded terraces, reducing direct sunlight, and allowing air to move naturally through the outdoor spaces. The museum is also elevated on columns to help protect its gallery and artwork from flooding and storm surges. PAMM is more than a museum.
