Among all the Donghua I've watched, I feel like Soul Land portrays its female characters the best.
The women are powerful, but they aren't written as damsels in distress who constantly need the MC to save them. They have their own personalities, goals, beliefs, and stories. They don't just bend around the MC's personality or exist solely to support him.
Not every woman is head over heels for the MC—which is honestly refreshing, because in many Donghua, almost every female character seems to fall for the protagonist simply because he's the protagonist. In Soul Land, women can admire and respect the MC without necessarily wanting to be with him. And when they clearly know that he already loves someone, they aren't automatically written as shamelessly chasing after him anyway.
I also like that the female characters aren't treated as trophies or rewards for the MC. They can disagree with him, make their own decisions, have their own ambitions, and stand on their own when he's not around. Even their relationships with other characters feel like they have meaning beyond the MC.
It feels like the women in Soul Land are actually respected as characters, rather than simply being written as female characters for the protagonist to collect. That's something I really appreciate about the series.
