I don’t know, man this kind of depends. I remember when I was in college and interviewing for a role at Texas Instruments. I didn’t really know what roles they really needed and was just trying to get my foot in the door. They were looking for a sales engineer, but I really really wanted a technical role. The thing is, the guy who was doing the interview was the hiring manager for the sales engineering role. So in a way I was kind of snubbing his team.

Personally in my interview I was asked the same question I’m a civil engineering student but was interested in construction management and applied and got the interview and asked if I preferred a role in office or work in the field I answered by saying id love to divide my time between both, my purpose here is to learn as much as I can about this career and that answer got me not only the internship but left a lasting impression where now I’m in my last week and my pm and senior supe both wrote recommendation letters for me to return as an intern at their job sites next summer it shows a willingness to learn and be flexible now I can decide my own options instead of being forced down one path

I agree with the point entirely. Weirdly enough though I got my internship this summer by not following this advice lol. I had similar experience and title of a role that they wanted to fill and they asked if I was open to it and I said yes and I got it lmao.
