These mallards are diving to feed on acorns that fell from a Delta post oak overhanging this slough. A boom acorn crop can mean the difference between having a few ducks in the woods and seeing hordes of them. Acorns are an important, energy-rich food for wintering mallards and one of the many reasons healthy bottomland hardwood forests remain such an important part of the Arkansas landscape.
