@christian.autism.adhd: “Because I said so” might stop the conversation, but it doesn’t always help an autistic or ADHD child understand the why behind what you’re asking. And bribery? That can fall flat too—especially when the payoff is too far away to feel motivating. Sometimes what works better is making the expectation clear, explaining the reason in a way they can understand, and connecting the consequence or reward closely to the behavior. We’re not lowering expectations—we’re teaching in a way their brain can actually use. 💛 #AutismParenting #ADHDParenting #NeurodivergentKids #NeurodivergentParenting #ChristianAutismADHD
when i was told because i said so i would take it as there isn't a big reason behind it. when i was told why, i understood and listened

i hated the "because i said so". just tell me whats going on so when things go haywire we can still get to the end product.

I hated hearing "because I said so" as a child and teen. "Because I said so" is not an acceptable reason, just explain why and I'll be more receptive, "because I said so" just feels like a cop-out to just flex authority over someone younger than you.

the other part that's extremely irritating is - "because we've always done it this way" or "that's just how it's always been".

had a boss tell me not to smoke out the back door, I asked why, they said "because I said so" my response was "thats not a reason, let me know when you find one" then proceed to light a cigarette outside the back door as I took out the 10 trash bags that were blocking the fire exit

i hated the “because i said so” as a child but as an adult its “because i said so” i don’t have to do anything you want or allow you to do anything you want. i don’t need to give you a reason if the answer is no, because the answer is no

I once had a grandparent, upon finding out I was autistic, ask how they could get their 4 year old autistic grandson to stop cursing. I asked what reason they were giving him to stop. They said, predictably, ‘Because I said so’. And I told them that had a snowballs chance in hell of working. I suggested they have a rule with structure that could apply to everyone. In my house, for example, it was that you had to have a certain amount of knowledge of proper English before you could use that sort of English. And that made sense to me. I told them it could be that Adults earned the privilege to use that word over time. Or something similar. But that they had to follow the rule as well or the who system would collapse and they’d be back to square one. Saw the grandparent again later and they told me it worked brilliantly.

This was my mom's catchphrase. And then she had the audacity to wonder why I was bad. If you never give a child the reason a thing is bad, they're gonna do it out of curiosity, and they aren't gonna think it's bad because "well mom couldn't think of a reason".
