@sarajmccord: The $20,000 SEC college freshman dorm rooms are less surprising that they are signifiers of wealth and culture gaps across this country right now, not to mention the monetization of rush social media
In the south people are always trying to establish dominance by showcasing their money in visible way. It’s the same as the girls wearing Zimmerman to rush. They need to establish they are better than everyone else in a visual, noticeable way. It doesn’t end in college either. You can see the moms jockeying for position at the local high school football game. Appearance is king here.

The designer is smart. She's gaining them as clients early on so she can get them again when they get their first apartment and when they buy the first house. You gotta respect the hustle.

I think people are seeing SEC culture up close for the first time. The dorm room decorations and rush outfits are not new. They have always worn things that were out of reach for the average college student at Alabama and had better furniture. The bar continues to raise bc of visibility and the old guard trying to keep their social positions. There has always been social power behind the traditions and displays of wealth with things like tailgating.

I'm in y'alls business but I'm just observing because all the Black women I know went to college strictly for an education.

In a perverse way, if the “goal” of sending your daughter to a SEC college is for her to meet the “right type” of man to marry, then you’re going to invest everything you can into her appearance and connections at that school- clothes, dorm, rush, etc.

This is not new. I went to Auburn in 2009.. it was like this then with the dorms. SEC schools are a different culture

I lived in a suite-style dorm my freshman year in 2000. My roommate's mom was an interior design major/ SAHM. She brought in a separate sofa, throw pillows, giant gold mirror, wall sconces with poodle plants, and tons of leopard print decor. We looked like Real Housewives of College Station 😂

Putting aside the cost (which is outrageous and a waste), I feel like the professionally decorated dorms and the rush consultants are both symptoms of a complete lack of individuality, confidence, and unique personality in this subset of the generation. You could make them change rooms and they would barely notice because there’s nothing personal. They all grew up being judged by people on the internet and the human brain can’t comprehend being perceiving by that many people, so they’ve decided to blend in out of fear of being seen as different. It’s boring and basic and a stupid waste of money.

I also think there is a portion of the population that CANT afford it, but are trying to launch their daughters into it. Middle/upper middle class that will stretch and put it on a credit card in hopes that they can get their daughter into “those societies” it’s the new “nouveau riche” if you will. Think Ainsley Norris from land man. 😅

Idc if I had 1M in extra disposable income, it’s a recipe to raise entitled kids. My friend was loaded growing up, her parents made her buy her own car and had to work every summer. Shes an amazing and humble adult. It’s about the lessons not the money

Someone in another video commented what a waste of money it is because they could save that money and give it as a down payment…I said “if they e got that much money to spend on a dorm room, then they’ve got the money for a separate down payment for a house”

At a certain point you have to decide what values you want to teach your kids regardless of whether you have the money.

I would rather my kids go to a school known for its academics instead of a school known for its greek life and fb team, but thats me. I say this as a mom who is sending her kid out of state for college.

I grew up in the south and I grew up going to SEC football games before going to an SEC school. Tradition is paramount here, it’s take precedence over everything. We wear dresses, full faces of makeup and have our hair blown out for football games. I grew up believing the way you present yourself to others is the way you see yourself. We had a rule in my house (as I’m sure all other southerners do) we called the 2/3 rule where we leave the house with at least 2/3 things: hair, makeup and clothes. It’s our culture we are trained from a young age to present ourselves highly. Our bedroom is no exception. I didn’t spend $20k but we did spend close to $10k. Presentation is everything.

Tuition is $12k? I live in Massachusetts. I went to a very competitive school in New England that now charges $92k a year. That tuition shocks me. In a good way.
