Wayland is the issue, use Xorg/X11 and synergy will work.

not your fault, it’s wayland. ubuntu defaults to it now and wayland blocks the input injection synergy needs. that’s why mac to windows is flawless and mac to ubuntu isn’t. log out, click the gear icon on the login screen, pick ubuntu on xorg, log back in. synergy 3 should behave like it does on windows. got two more fixes if that doesn’t do it.

I had this issue with PopOS. It works fine if you use GNOME in X-11 but not Wayland. It doesn’t look as beautiful but it works. I have 6 computers windows, macOS, popos (Linux), and parrot os (Linux). The Parrot one sorta works in Wayland but it starts eating a ton of memory.

You did not define a goal. Maybe you don’t need soft kvm, maybe good ultra wide monitor will be enough

just configure waypipe. or sunshine and moonlight for OBO session streaming. you don't have to try to make the same proprietary software work on three platforms. software is mutable and disposable and there're a billion ways to do one thing

ubuntu has issues with remote programs(kvms included) when wayland is enabled(which is by default). have you turned that off yet?

Why not just run the Ubuntu as a VM on the Mac? Or VNC.

Why are you asking for help if you didnt even bother with Barrier? Also, if you're having that much trouble with Linux being the guest, flip it and use Ubuntu as the primary and Mac as the guest, you might have some better results.
Alternative option, if you have enough resources, run a hackintosh VM on Ubuntu or Ubuntu VM on Mac. Or better yet, use a hardware KVM switch instead :)

Serious question, if you have a Mac why are you using a Linux machine, especially as a desktop? I'd just rethink that setup. I say this as someone who used Linux desktops for literally decades and is an old time sysadmin turned SRE who has been using Linux at home and for work, from single machines to huge clusters, since 1993. Linux is critical to my daily life. But I don't use it as a desktop because I just burnt out on dealing with things like this. Life is so much easier when you use it solely for what it's good at.

To be honest depends on what you do for work. I have the same work from the Mac in local or to my Debian. And usually even away from it so since I develop software I use remote development which works well a connect with ssh throw a vps. So it really depends if you need a “Remote Desktop” or just a machine you can access

There was an older version of synergy, back before it became paid. I always liked it better.

I’m unfortunately not surprised by the people recommending remote desktop software instead of “I have two computers next to each other powered on and in active use at the same time and want to share one set of peripherals between the two” software. I’m sticking around because I use Synergy at work and also don’t have a good Mac/Kubuntu solution at home
