A man born into wealth, Charles extensively studied genetics (and other areas depending on the canon) in his youth before deciding to dedicate his life to training and protecting his fellow mutants. He supports the integration of mutants into society and living among humans as equals, and takes a peaceful (but not always pacifist) approach to achieving this goal. Though he is usually positioned as the "good guy" in X-Men stories, his approach has been criticized as assimilationist at best and "milquetoast liberal" at worst by both the text and audiences Erik Magnus Lehnsherr, also known as Magneto, has powers related to metal and magnetism. His backstory varies depending on canon, but a nearly universal constant is that he is a Jewish survivor of the Holocaust, a trauma that informs his view of the world. He met Charles — the first other mutant he'd ever met — and they quickly became close friends. However they would tragically become (off-and-on) archenemies. Unlike classic archenemies, the central conflict between them is not personal, but political. Erik's ideology has changed extensively depending on era and canon, and as such has been labeled as liberatory, separatist, and supremacist. The most universal constant is his conviction that mutants must be protected from human oppression — by any means necessary. He believes Charles' integrationist and pacifist ideology to be cowardly and naive. The characters first appeared in the first issue of X-Men comics, cementing their roles as central figures in its canon.
